Air Tahiti Nui adds a local project to its voluntary carbon offset program
Papeete, 11/10/2025
Air Tahiti Nui is reinforcing its commitment to preserving French Polynesia through its voluntary carbon offset program developed in partnership with CarbonClick. From now on, travelers who choose to offset the CO₂ emissions of their Air Tahiti Nui flights will also contribute to funding a local environmental project led by the Manu Association: the preservation of Tahiti's monarch birds (Pomarea nigra), an endemic and highly endangered species.
Since 2021, Air Tahiti Nui has been giving its passengers the option to offset the carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions generated by their flights. Voluntary carbon offsetting allows everyone to neutralize the emissions generated by their daily activities, such as driving or flying, eating meat, or consuming energy. It consists of offsetting or balancing these impacts by supporting projects that reduce or capture an equivalent amount of CO₂, such as planting trees, financing renewable energy, or protecting forests and natural areas.
This system allows travelers to finance a selection of international environmental projects with certified positive impact. Air Tahiti Nui is delighted to announce the latest addition to its voluntary carbon offset program: a local environmental project based in French Polynesia.
The Manu association is an NGO that has been working for over 35 years to protect endemic birds in The Islands of Tahiti. Its flagship project focuses on a critically endangered species, the Tahitian Monarch bird (Pomarea nigra).
By choosing voluntary carbon offsetting with Air Tahiti Nui, travelers now contribute:
- to the fight against invasive species that threaten the Tahitian Monarch,
- to the restoration of its natural habitat,
- and to its reintroduction into the island’s valleys.
Our offset program mainly includes certified projects, guaranteeing a real and measurable impact on emissions reduction. However, we have also chosen to include this non-certified project, which is too small to meet the stringent certification criteria but plays a crucial role in protecting unique and threatened biodiversity. This project directly restores the natural habitat of monarch birds by planting endemic trees.
“As an airline deeply committed to French Polynesia, it was important for us to give our passengers’ environmental contributions a local dimension. That’s why, together with our partner CarbonClick, we chose to support a local initiative to raise awareness among tourists about the delicate balance of our island ecosystem and to collectively support organizations committed to climate and biodiversity, in pursuit of a more responsible tourism” emphasizes Heifara Morienne, Director of Administration and Organization in charge of Air Tahiti Nui's CSR approach.
“We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with Air Tahiti Nui by integrating the essential project led by the Manu Association into their carbon offset program. This local initiative, led by a Tahiti-based NGO, allows travelers to directly contribute to the preservation of the Tahitian Monarch, a critically endangered species, and its habitat. CarbonClick’s transparent platform makes it easy to support certified global carbon offset projects while also backing this tangible, on-the-ground action, thus promoting responsible tourism that protects Polynesia’s unique biodiversity” says Dave Rouse, CEO of CarbonClick.
By offsetting your emissions, you are not only financing global projects but also supporting valuable on-the-ground actions that preserve the natural treasures of sensitive regions such as Polynesia. This contribution benefits the climate, the environment, and the community.
To encourage this responsible approach, the Polynesian airline has committed to covering 50% of the emissions of its volunteer passengers. This initiative embodies the CSR commitments made by the airline over the course of the last 10 years.
